La Rocca cakes…where have you been all my life?

La Rocca Super Caramel Crunch

Paul and I recently discovered La Rocca cakes when we needed to buy a last-minute birthday cake. I had heard several bloggers raving about La Rocca and I knew that their cakes were sold at local grocery stores so we went and picked up a Brownie Chocolate Cheesecake. That was last month. Since then we’ve bought two more (yes, that’s three in one month for those keeping track).

La Rocca cakes are incredible decadent, but at an affordable price. You may have even already had a slice without knowing it since La Rocca also supplies many cafes and restaurants.

Based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, La Rocca Creative Cakes was established in Canada in 1987 by Lina and Harvey Givens, continuing a family tradition of dessert making that began 60 years ago in Naples, Italy. Brothers Marty & Michael joined soon the business soon after. Marty spent a year in Italy apprenticing under their family’s best and most experienced bakers and returned to Canada with the original family recipes in hand.

La Rocca recently contacted me and asked if I’d like to taste test a cake for Mother’s Day. Of course! They sent over their super-popular Super Caramel Crunch, which my mom was very happy to see and we celebrated Mother’s Day a bit early so that we could all try the cake.

La Rocca Super Caramel Crunch

The Super Caramel Crunch is La Rocca’s most famous cake. Two toasted layers of pecan meringue are sandwiched between alternating layers of caramel and fresh 35% whipped cream. This cake not only looks impressive, it tastes that way as well.

Since I’m a fan of crunchy/chewy desserts (think macarons), meringue is a personal favourite of mine. When you combine the nutty-taste of this cake’s meringue with the soft caramel and fresh, thick cream…. Wow. The cake is rich, without being too filling and, despite what you might expect, this cake is not overly sweet, making it a lovely after-dinner treat.

My parents, who don’t particularly care for sweets or dessert, both really enjoyed the cake (my mom couldn’t wait to dig into it!). Happy (early) Mother’s Day, mom!

I can definitely say that La Rocca cakes is quickly becoming a family tradition for us. With so many different options, there’s a cake for every taste and occasion, although the Super Caramel Crunch will always be one of our top choices!
